How Does Permanent Hair Removal Work?
IPL and Laser Hair Removal works by harnessing the energy produced by light to target and heat the hair follicles; destroying the capillary that feeds the hair growth.
In particular, IPL technology uses a pulsed light of multiple wave lengths to safely target a variety of hair types on light to dark skin tones, without damaging the surrounding skin.
IPL and Laser hair removal technology is most effective when treatments are performed during each follicles ‘growth phase’ and will require a series of sessions in order to target the hair at the right time. However, you will notice significant hair reduction after each session.
Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
IPL and Laser hair removal will permanently treat all suitable hair follicles over a course of treatments when performed at the correct intervals.
However, not all hair follicles are in the ‘growth phase’ at the same time. Some follicles are dormant for up to 12 months before producing new hair. Also, hormonal changes and medications can activate previously dormant hair follicles to begin producing a small amount of hair.
In general, a target of 80% reduction of existing, treatable hair is considered baseline after your initial sessions; with some yearly touch up sessions recommended in order to treat any active follicles that may appear from time to time.
What Is The Difference Between IPL, SHR and Laser?
While all technologies are used to reduce hair growth, the difference is the type of light used.
Laser utilises a single and focused wave length of light to target the hair follicles at a specific depth. In contrast, IPL utilises a wide beam of multiple wavelengths that pulse down through the skin to target follicles at multiple depths.
As well as having the ability to cover a larger area of hair in a shorter time, our IPL devices can also be adjusted to specifically match different skin and hair types; allowing us to personally customise the most suitable treatment settings for your individual needs.
SHR is an advanced IPL technology that covers a larger area faster and more effectively. Plus our SHR device has a recently developed, cooling component that makes the treatment completely pain-free.

There are a few situations that laser hair removal is not a suitable solution.
Please speak to one of our highly qualified dermal therapists if you are unsure.

- Epilepsy
- Porphyria
- Diabetes
- Tattoos on the treated area
- Some medications that cause photo sensitivity.
To ensure your treatment is safe and effective refrain from excess sun exposure two weeks prior to treatment.
For 10 days prior to treatment cease the use of waxing, tweezing, depilatory creams, self-tan or aromatherapy products in the area.
24 hours prior to your appointment cleanly shave the area and on the day of the appointment refrain from using deodorant.
Our therapists are able to shave areas (except intimate areas). Please let the clinic know if this is required so we can allow additional time to your treatment.
There is no downtime post-treatment but we ask you do not engage in excessive exercise immediately post treatment.
The treatment will make the skin sun sensitive, so avoid direct sunlight, and wear a high SPF sunscreen and hat whenever outdoors.
The number of treatments and the treatment cycle will depend on the areas being treated.
For most body areas, a course of 6 – 8 treatments is required to achieve an optimal result.
Facial hair often requires additional treatments.
We recommend that once you have completed your treatment cycle, book a maintenance treatment once every 6-12 months.
It is also important to know that results can vary depending on the areas being treated and can be influenced by sex, age and hormones.
